Third Generation (Grandparents)

The Bixby Surname: The Bixby surname originates in old England. Although how the name came to be, and what it means is not known, I have my own theory: The first documented name is that of John Bekesby. He lived in the parish of Thorp Morieux in Suffolk, England from about 1339 to 1404. Thorp Morieux is in a part of England north of London that had been conquered and ruled by Danish Vikings and therefore was influenced by the Danish language, among other things. The influence of this period of Scandinavian settlement can still be seen and heard there, most evidently in place names: name endings such as "by" or "thorp" being particular giveaways.

If one breaks down the name Bekesby into syllables, the prefix "beke" can easily be a corrupted form of the modern Danish word "bæk,"  or the Old Norse word "beck", both of which mean "stream." There is indeed a stream that runs through that area where John lived. Likewise, the suffix "by" in both Old Norse and modern Danish means village or settlement. In my mind, it is very possible that John simply took the name Bekesby as his identifying name because it placed him in an area with a stream beside a village.

Helen Bixby, daughter of Simon Sherman Bixby and Osthilia (Phila) Therese
Lake
, was born 1856 in Bath, Steuben, New York, died on 25 Oct 1885 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California and was buried at Oddfellows Cemetery at age 29.

Claire was born on 21 Jan 1891 in Winona, Winona, Minnesota, died on 18 Mar 1969 in Bakersfield, Kern, California at age 78.
ii. Paul Crum (born on 5 Aug 1880 in Andover, Allegany, New York - died on 29 Oct 1957 in Ft. Harrison, Montana).

Lou was born on 16 Jun 1884 in Merced, Merced, California, died on 15 Mar 1955 in Bellflower, Los Angeles, California at age 70.

Fourth Generation (Great-Grandparents)

Simon Sherman Bixby, son of Amasa Bixby and Sophia Blashfield, was born on 8 Dec 1823 in Campbell, Steuben, New York, died on 17 Jun 1904 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California, and was buried at Oddfellows Cemetery (Santa Cruz Memorial Park) at age 80.

Simon married Osthilia (Phila) Therese Lake on 9 Jul 1849 in Bath, Steuben,

Edward's land in North Dakota was acquired by the BLM as a Migratory Bird Cons. - deeded away on Feb 18, 1929.

Annis was born on 28 Jan 1854 in Bath, Steuben, New York, died on 30 Dec 1926 in Berkeley, Alameda, California; Buried at Oddfellows Cemetery (Santa Cruz Memorial Park) at age 72. It is probable that Russell Rock, who was known as Rock, was named after Simon Bixby's brother-in-law, Russel Rock/Root/Rook who was married to Sally C, Simon's sister. The two of them are buried in the East Campbell Cemetery in New York where Sampson and Sarah Bicsbee and Amasa and Sophia Bixby are buried, as well. (Sally died very young in 1847.It is possible Simon and Phila named their first son after Sally's husband as a gesture of love. or something. )
iii. Helen Bixby (born in 1856 in Bath, Steuben, New York - died on 25 Oct 1885 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California. Her name is on a headstone at Oddfellows Cemetery).
iv. Frank L. Bixby was born on 7 Apr 1859 in Bath, Steuben, NY, died on 13 Nov 1943 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California; Buried at Oakland Memorial Park In Santa Cruz at age 84. Charlotte was born on 9 Sep 1863 in Placer, California, died on 27 Sep 1930 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California at age 67. Charles was a druggist, first in Santa Cruz - Bixby's Drug Store, then in Oakland, California.

Hiram was born on 9 May 1861 in Addison, Steuben, New York, died on 29 Jan 1940 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California and was buried at Oakland Memorial Park In Santa Cruz at age 78. Hattie seemed to be the glue that held the family together. But that is just a feeling gained from reading the various details of the other family member's lives. She was close to Paul and may have been a maternal factor in his life after Helen died.

Hattie had one child, a daughter, Irma Reynolds. Irma was born in Minnesota in December of 1887. Hattie and Irma Reynolds moved back to California, and Paul and the little Irma seemed to have become close cousins - perhaps the little sister he never had - and the big brother she never had. Irma wrote to Paul several times after he returned to North Dakota. She died from illness at the age of 20 - not having been able to finish her studies at the University of California at Berkeley. Paul named his first daughter after her. His second daughter he named after his mother. That in itself is a statement of how much she meant to him.

Joseph Bixby, son of George Bixby and Anna Cole, was born on 28 Oct 1621 in Little Waldingfield, Suffolk, England, died on 19 Apr 1701 in Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts at age 79.

"The Bixby Genealogy" part I, pages 7 through 28, (The Bixby Genealogy; Author: Willard Golthwaite Bixby, S.B. ; Publication: Willard G. Bixby, 46th St. And 2nd Ave., Brooklyn Boro, 1914) gives an extensive write-up on Joseph, as does "Twenty-six Great Migration Colonists to New England" pages 3 through 10. (Twenty-Six Great Migration Colonists to New England & their Origins; Author: John Brooks Threlfall; Publication: Madison, Wisconsin 1993.) Joseph was the first Bixby in the colonies and it is believed he traveled to the new world in about 1645. The exact date of his coming to New England is not known but it was before 1638, as his name does not appear on the muster roll of Babergh Hundred, Suffolk in 1638, which should have embraced all able bodied males between the ages of sixteen and sixty, and on which his father's name appears. It is likely that he had already gone to New England. The first American record of him is in 1647 on the eve of his marriage to his intended wife, the widow Sarah Hearde, Joseph signed a bond to provide for the proper bringing up and education of her two children by her late husband, Luke Hearde. They lived at Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, later at Boxford. Joseph Bixby was a man of prominence in the community and held many public offices.  The record of Joseph Bixby's public service is not complete but he was chosen sergeant of the "soldiery of Topsfield and Villages adjoining thereto, 1666. He was a carpenter. In 1674, in a deposition, he stated his age as fifty four years. On the 1687 Boxford tax list, Joseph was described as "an old, decrepit man." At that time he owned a house, 14 acres, 2 oxen, 1 horse, 4 cows, 2 young cattle, 2 sheep, and 2 swine. His assessment was for 3s.4d.

Joseph married Sarah Riddlesdale (who had previously been married to Luke Heard with whom she had three children: John, John and Edmund Heard. This first John was born and died in 1643.) on 15 Oct 1647 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Sarah was born on 16 Nov 1623 in Assington, Suffolk, England, died on 3 Jun 1704 in Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts at age 80.
